Trincomalee is a coastal city located in the North East part of Sri Lanka on a peninsula. It offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the country! It has also been labeled as one of the finest natural, deep-water harbors in the world. Here are 9 awesome things you should do while visiting this relaxing town:
1. Uppuveli Beach
Arguably the main beach of the area. Most of the foreigners flock here because of its proximity to the downtown area and the amount of local restaurants. It's a nice beach to walk around and restaurant hop, do some water sports, watch some beach volleyball, or simply lay out and enjoy the beach. Most people choose to stay in the area too because the accommodations are quite cheap for the most part!
2. Nilaveli Beach
A super beautiful beach that all the locals flock to. Literally all the locals. You won't see too many foreigners (especially compared to Uppuveli beach) and there isn't too much to eat or do in the area besides the beach itself. But the views are gorgeous! Beachfront cabanas, light sand, clear water...and views of the lush Pigeon island.
3. Pigeon Island
A popular destination for snorkeling! You can take a boat from Nilaveli beach for about 10-15 minutes. You can see the island from the shore! One thing to note is how ridiculously overpriced it is for foreigners. You must pay 6,000 LKR for the park entrance fee + 2,000 LKR for the boat ride- that's a whopping 8,000 LKR ($45 USD) per person. If that's not in your budget (like me!) you can admire the beauty of the island from the shores of Nilaveli Beach.
4. Marble Beach
Another beach, about 11 miles SW of downtown Trincomalee city. A beautiful cove with light tan sand, bright blue waters, and green trees lining the shore.
5. Fernando's Beach Bar
A super cool restaurant and bar on Uppuveli Beach. There are tree houses with bean bags, swing seats at the bar, and tables right on the sand. The food is a bit pricey compared to the surrounding area, but you can't ask for a better view for your meal. Grab a drink or a full meal while you listen to great music and watch the waves crash right in front of you.
6. Sri Pathrakali Amman Kovil
This is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali, a form of the goddess Kali Amman in Trincomalee. It is super detailed and full of life and color. It truly is a unique temple to see. I know in this "beachy" town you're used to wearing shorts and your bathing suit, but be sure to bring appropriate clothes for entering the temple.
7. Eat fresh seafood
Duh, it's a beach city! The seafood is so fresh and decently priced. Indulge on a tuna steak, seafood Kottu, or even spring for a full-on seafood platter. Whatever you try, it's sure to be delicious!
8. Try one of the curry buffets
There are so many restaurants that offer curry buffets where you can try multiple types of curries! It's an amazing way to get a little taste of so many Sri Lankan specialities! They typically range between 800-850 LKR (About $4.50 USD) for all-you-can-eat curry, so eat as much as you can.
9. Water Sports
On every beach you'll see signs for a plethora of water sports and activities you can try! Scuba diving, snorkeling, wind surfing, surfing, sea-doo rentals, and more. You can meet all of your adrenaline junkie or water lover needs!
